What role(s) are currently open on your team and where are they based?
I currently have 37 openings: 19 Sale roles and 18 Systems Engineer (SE) roles in markets that include: TOLA, New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Seattle, Denver, Phoenix, Montreal, Toronto, Dubai, Tokyo, and across the EU, as well as dedicated to Federal DOD and Civilian. Why should a prospective employee consider Big Switch if they are looking for a new opportunity, what makes the company unique?
It’s simple, great technology. Big Switch is creating game-changing technology that will impact the market in the long-term. The company is already taking mindshare from the incumbents who have been stagnant with innovation in this industry for the past 20 years. Customers gain a ton of value from our next-gen, differentiated solutions, compared to the current status quo for data center network infrastructure. Plus, it’s a really great team. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, it’s an easy culture to slide into, very welcoming, we work hard, but we have fun while we do it -- there is a real sense of camaraderie.
What would you consider to be the advantage(s) for a prospective employee choosing between an opportunity at a younger company, like Big Switch, or a larger company with more market share?
This really depends on what he/she is looking for. At Big Switch, every employee is making an impact on the company and has a say in what this looks like and how we are building it. Every employee is given a ton of opportunity and it’s truly “the sky’s the limit” in terms of what they choose to do with it. At a big company it’s easy to get lost and go unnoticed.
What do you think the biggest challenge(s) for a prospective employee stepping into a sales or SE role at Big Switch is?
The challenge comes from within. In a startup like Big Switch, our sales reps and SEs have to evangelize and educate every day. There is no time to sit back, there are no bluebird freebies and no one else is going to build the customer relationships for you. If you work hard and smart, appreciate the cause and effect of your effort, then Big Switch is the place to be.
Who would do well at Big Switch? What sort of disposition and experience are you looking for?
Personal character is at the top of the list, anyone joining this team needs to be a good teammate, do their job well and always act in the best interest of the company. We need people who deliver results and who have a proven history of building something out of nothing. If you have a resume with multiple positions lasting 1-2 years at each, I’m not interested. I believe great people don't leave something they’ve built and good companies don't let great people become unhappy.
What does the next 12 months look like for Big Switch? What are you most excited about?
Very exciting! Where the company is at right now -- this is exactly what people join a startup for -- when it takes off. Our growth and KPI metrics the last 3 quarters have been phenomenal, which is why we are more than doubling our current sales force. As the company scales there will be many opportunities for promotion, and I have a very long history of promoting from within. I do not believe in bringing outside people in for newly created leadership roles when I already have the talent under my nose. This next phase is going to be a fight, with good days and bad days, but I’m confident the kinks that come along with the growing pains of a late-stage start-up are largely worked out and we are on to successful and repeatable processes that will enable the collective team to scale-out the company.
For a candidate interviewing for an open role on the your team, what advice would you offer them?
Be yourself. Focus on the substance and not the optics. Show us who you are, why you will make a difference at Big Switch, what you will add to the team. We need people that will be contributing to the company’s top-line, but also enhance the culture. Within this team and the company you will find ambitious, smart people with can-do, positive attitudes and that is what we are looking for.

As VP, he grew revenues from $20M to $140M and secured the company's 2013 IPO. Hoffman captured 66 of the Fortune 100 and nurtured Gigamon’s top 25 high-profile customers to reach a $4.4M median install per account. His defensive selling strategy set the stage for what is today measured as a $1B in potential lifetime value from existing customers. Hoffman served 8 years in the U.S. Navy and is a Gulf War Veteran. He holds a BA and an MBA from Saint Mary’s College of California.
